A One-Day Pre-Conference Workshop with Andrew Tatarsky, PhD, Scott Kellogg, PhD, and Sheila Vakharia, PhD, MSW

9:30: Andrew Tatarsky, PhD – Integrative Harm Reduction Psychotherapy (IHRP)

In this session, Dr. Tatarsky will discuss Compassionate Pragmatism, the Psychobiosocial process model of addictive and risky behavior, and the seven therapeutic tasks of IHRP. Participants will learn and practice: (1) Empathic Listening; (2) Urge Surfing; and (3) Unwrapping the Urge.

12:30-1:30: Lunch

1:30-2:30: Sheila Vakharia, PhD, MSW – Multicultural Perspectives on Harm Reduction Therapy

2:30: Scott Kellogg, PhD – Transformational Chairwork

In this session, participants will learn how to use therapeutic dialogues to: (1) Explore and Increase the Motivation to Change; and (2) Further Develop the Capacity for Self-Compassion. In addition, participants will be introduced to the Four Dialogue Matrix.

5:30: Group Check-out

The fee for this workshop is $200.

About the Presenters:

Andrew Tatarsky, PhD, is the Director of the Center for Optimal Living in New York City. He is the author of Harm Reduction Psychotherapy: A New Treatment for Drug and Alcohol Problems, and he has trained clinicians in his approach both in the United States and throughout the world.

Sheila Vakharia, PhD, MSW, is the Policy Manager for the Office of Academic Engagement for the Drug Policy Alliance; she previously served on the faculty of Long Island University – Brooklyn. Among other topics, Dr. Vakharia’s focus on the integration of harm reduction principles in public policy.

Scott Kellogg, PhD, is the creator of the Transformational Chairwork Psychotherapy Project. In addition to a having a therapeutic practice in New York City, he has trained clinicians in the Art and Science of Chairwork in the United States and abroad. He is the author of Transformational Chairwork: Using Psychotherapeutic Dialogues in Clinical Practice.

These workshops involve working with personal material and/or the experiences that one has had in working with patients and clients in their clinical practice. To promote safety, we will ask all participants to abide by clinical confidentiality. Nonetheless, these workshops can be a profound and quite emotional experience at times. Each participant is responsible for their own mental and emotional health and they are encouraged to pause and/or take whatever steps are necessary to process the material that comes up in the role-plays and demonstrations.
